What is the Elipse Balloon?

The Elipse balloon (also known as the swallowable balloon) is a form of weight loss procedure where a balloon is placed in the stomach and inflated to reduce the stomach volume and help you to reduce your weight. However, its placement technique is very different and way more comfortable. It requires no surgery, endoscopy, or anesthesia since it can be swallowed as a pill and inflated with fluid. It fills a big volume of your stomach so that you would eat less and eventually start losing weight.

Do I Need to Place an Elipse Balloon?

This procedure is required by people who want to lose weight but failed to do so with regular methods such as dieting and exercising. Your weight is identified by using a metric known as the body mass index (BMI) which is the ratio of your weight to your height. A BMI of 30 to 35 is considered obese, 35 to 40 is considered extreme obesity, while over 40 is considered morbid obesity, where your weight starts to have a negative effect on your general health. The Elipse balloon is needed for people with BMI between 30 and 40.

How is the Procedure Done?

The Elipse balloon is the least invasive and easiest weight loss procedure. It requires no surgery, anesthesia, or endoscopy, and you are awake throughout the entire process. The balloon is supplied in the form of a pill that you swallow with water and attached to a very small filling tube about the size of a thread. Once you swallow the pill, the surgeon will make sure it reached the designated area of the stomach (known as the Fundus) with the help of a quick x-ray. Once it is in place, fluid is pumped through the filling tube to inflate the balloon, and the filling tube is retracted, sealing the balloon in your stomach. It takes about 15 painless minutes through which you are awake and able to talk and chat.

Life with the Elipse Balloon

Unlike other invasive bariatric surgeries, the Elipse balloon is a minimally invasive and easily reversible procedure, requiring very limited adjustment to your lifestyle. Most patients would lose about 15% of their body weight in the first few months. However, to get the most out of your procedure and lose the maximum amount of weight, we recommend you follow the following steps:
· You would be limited to a liquid diet for a few days, and gradually add solid foods when you’re comfortable.
· The balloon would make you eat less and feel full faster, but it can’t control what you eat. We advise you to consult a dietician to formulate the best possible diet for your case.
· A regular schedule of exercise is essential for the best results in weight loss.
· Since you’ll be eating less, you might not be getting all the nutrients you need from the food, which is where again the dietician comes into play. Be sure that your diet includes all the essential nutrients from proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins.

When & How is the Elipse Balloon Removed?

One of the greatest advantages of this technique is that it requires no removal process. After the balloon did its job in helping you lose your weight (typically that takes about 4 months) the valve on the balloon releases and it is deflated on its own over the course of a few days. It then passes naturally with the food without the need for any removal procedure.

What Other Endoscopic Procedures For Weight Loss are Recommended?

The Elipse Balloon may be the least invasive method of weight loss with the least amount of complications, but is not the only one. Be sure to ask your surgeon about the Intragastric balloon and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.
