What is Meant by Breast Surgery?

As the name suggests, breast surgeries are a group of surgeries that are performed for both men and women in the breast area. There are 2 main types of breast surgeries, and these are cosmetic surgeries such as breast augmentation and reduction, and general – or therapeutic – surgeries such as breast cancer removal surgeries. We specialize in the latter type.

How Would I Know If I Need
Breast Surgery?

Breast surgeries are needed when a problem arises in the breast area. These problems include:
· Infection and Abscess.
· Cysts.
· Tumors (both benign and malignant)
· Any lump of unknown origin or effect.
The first symptom that should alert you to a problem is a visible or palpable lump in your breast. If that lump is painful, it is even more indicative of a problem, and we advise you to seek advice from your surgeon as soon as possible.
Unlike common belief, breast problems can occur for both men and women, although they are far more common in women. With early detection, the surgery becomes relatively easy and with no major complications, which is why early detection through screening– which we also offer – is a critical part of your surgical journey.

How Is The Surgery Performed?

This mainly depends on the reason for the surgery. Small lumps and cysts can be removed as an outpatient procedure with minimal anesthesia or sedation. Larger lumps and cancers would require general anesthesia. The length of the procedure also varies accordingly.
Access to the breast is gained through an incision in the breast crease so that the scar isn’t visible. The lump is taken out and sent for testing in a laboratory. Finally, the surgical area is cleaned and the wound is closed. You would be monitored for a little while afterward again depending on the extent of the surgery performed.

What Happens During The Recovery Period?

As with any surgery, you would need to take it easy for a few days. You should do all your effort to keep the wound clean and dry and make sure you stick to the follow-up schedule recommended by your surgeon. You should be back to normal in a few weeks.
However, we recommend you reach out to your surgeon if you feel any of the following signs or symptoms:
· Swelling in your arms.
· A fever.
· Uncontrollable pain or swelling.
· Loss of appetite, nausea, or vomiting.
· Dizziness or headaches.
